I just switched to Apple and found out that only Apple Maps shows the step by step direction on the heads up display on my BMW when connected via CarPlay. There are two head-up display modes which by default are set for normal and M-mode, respectively. You can select which one you want to use for each mode in Settings. ps, when people say "heads"-up display it makes me cringe.
